Eyebags

What is the first thing you notice when you see a person? For me, it would be the eyes.

What happens during ageing?

  1. We use facial fat in our midcheeks, which acts as a natural support for your undereyes
  2. Bony recession occurs and eyes become more hollow
  3. Skin loses elasticity and fine lines and wrinkles set in

Hence, combination treatment is important, marrying surgery with skin quality improvement and dermal fillers. Each treatment is specifically designed to improve your orbital skin texture, tone and quality.

What causes eyebags?

In yours 20s to 30s, this is due to fluid retention, through allergies, diet rich in salt, illness etc. This increases pressure around the areas and pushes your blood vessels closer to the skin surface, hence your dark rings become more visible.

How can we fix eyebags?

  1. In your 20s and 30s: First identify it’s a true eyebag and not muscle band. For those in their 20s and 30s, it is commonly a result of strong ocular muscles, commonly due to a lifestyle of eyestrain from studying, work, partying etc. Muscle relaxants can reduce this muscle tension and improve the appearance of your eyes.
  2. In your 30s and 40s: A true eyebag starts to develop. A groove is visible in the undereye, which represents volume loss in the underlying midcheek. This groove can be improved with a single touch of dermal fillers.
  3. In your 50s and beyond: Your eyebag grows bigger due to weakening of the skin, orbital muscles and orbital septum and accumulation of more orbital fat. Your options here are surgical vs non surgical.

Surgically, lower eyelid blepharoplasty can be done to excise excess loose skin and fat pads.

Non surgically, in my experience, peri-orbital skin can be nicely reinforced with a combination of rejuran and plasma skin resurfacing to improve skin quality. And a touch of dermal fillers strategically placed to create a harmonised contour. These reaches near surgical results without the downtime of surgery. Skin changes takes time though, but good things are worth waiting for. =)anatomy-of-eye-bags-eyelid-surgery-by-prof-dr-cn-chua-the-surface.jpg

That wraps it up. IMHO, the eyes are one of the most vital areas for facial rejuvenation. It provides the foundation for a beautiful face. Treating the eye area is extremely challenging, but performed correctly, the results can be natural, yet dramatic.
