Dry eye Syndrome

Show of hands, how many of you suffer from Dry Eyes? I for one, get that rather frequently, so much so that it makes be sleepy sometimes lol. Hence, I decided to share this article with you on dry eyes, and how you can fix it.

What is Dry eyes?

This is a common condition that occurs when

  1. Poor quantity of tears.
  2. Poor quality of tears. Combination of the constituents is inappropriate.

Tear are essential and helps to protect against eye infection, support and hydrate your eyes. Long term dry eyes can lead to poor vision and eye infections.

What are the symptoms of dry eyes?

  1. red, gritty feel in the eyes
  2. temporary blurring of vision
  3. watery eyes, which is a reflex tearing as a result of irritation

So what causes dry eyes?

Tears are a combination of

  1. Oil – Produced from meibomian glands on your eyelids.
  2. Water – Produced from lacrimal glands on the upper outer corner of your eye.
  3. Mucus – Produced by goblet cells in your conjunctiva.

What can lead to dry eyes?

  1. Ageing. This is a normal process and many above the age of 60 suffer from dry eyes.
  2. Medical conditions and certain medication
  3. Lifestyle factors. In my clinical experience, 33% of working professsionals suffer from this, And it is often due to three reasons, contact lens use, air conditioned enviroment and prolonged computer work. So I often tell my patients, dont work too hard!

So how can we fix dry eyes?

  1. Mild cases respond to lifestyle changes and eye lubricants. Eye lubricants + lifestyle changes diet (protein, fish oil, and stay away from prolonged air conditioning)
  2. Moderate cases may require steroids and LID margin HYGIENCE – clean your eyes, and consider Steroid eyedrops reduces the inflammation which worsens dryness
  3. Severe cases may require surgical intervention.
